How to Choose a Bedside Alarm Clock So Your Phone Can Stay Out of Bed

Updated September 19, 2026 by Nest & Nook Home.

Quick answer: choose a bedside clock that does the two jobs your phone usually does at night, telling the time and waking you up, without the notifications. Look for a display you can dim low (or a glow-in-the-dark analog dial), an alarm you can set reliably, buttons you can find in the dark, and a power setup you understand: plug-in or USB models, ideally with a memory backup, or a battery analog clock.

Once a clock handles those jobs, the phone can charge somewhere else. That is the whole point: the room answers the time question without handing you messages and feeds at 3 a.m.

Why a dedicated clock helps

Most people pick up the phone at night for a reasonable reason, usually to check the time or the alarm. The phone then offers everything else on the screen. Among the habits the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists for better sleep is turning off electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bedtime. A bedside clock makes that easier to keep. It is a boundary, not a sleep treatment.

Our longer article on a healthier bedside routine covers light, nightstand setup and where to put the phone.

The display: bright enough to read, dim enough to sleep

  • Brightness levels. A display you can turn down low matters more than almost any other feature. Several clocks in our shop list three brightness levels or adjustable brightness.
  • Digit color. Harvard Health Publishing notes that blue light at night affects the body’s natural rhythm more than other colors. If a clock offers red or amber digits, that setting is worth trying for night use.
  • Projection. A projection clock shows the time on the ceiling or wall, so you can check it without lifting your head.
  • Analog option. A silent analog clock with luminous hands gives you the time with no lit display at all.

The alarm: set it once, trust it every morning

  • Two alarms help when two people share a room or your weekday and weekend times differ.
  • Snooze and volume. Check the snooze length and whether the volume can be lowered to a gentler level.
  • Loud bells. Traditional twin bell clocks are listed with loud, hammer-struck bells for heavy sleepers.
  • Sunrise-style lights brighten gradually before the alarm time. Treat this as a comfort feature and check the listing for how the light and alarm work together.

Power: know what happens overnight

Plug-in and USB clocks keep the display lit, which is what you want for a readable bedside clock. Check whether the listing includes a wall adapter or only a cable, and whether it has a memory backup battery that keeps the time and settings if the power is interrupted. Whether the alarm still sounds during an outage depends on the model, so ask before buying if that matters to you. Battery analog clocks keep running through outages but do not light up.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a smart alarm clock?

No. For keeping the phone out of bed, a simple clock with a dimmable display and a reliable alarm does the job. Smart features are optional.

What display color is best at night?

Many people find red or amber digits less harsh than bright white or blue. Whatever the color, being able to turn the brightness down is the most useful feature.

Will the alarm work during a power cut?

It depends on the model. A memory backup keeps the time and settings, but not every plug-in clock sounds its alarm without power. Battery analog clocks keep running. Check the listing or ask us before buying.

Are twin bell alarm clocks loud?

They are designed to be. The twin bell clocks in our shop are listed with a loud bell alarm, and several also use a silent non-ticking movement so they stay quiet until the alarm goes off.

Where should the phone go instead?

Somewhere you cannot reach from bed, such as a dresser across the room or a charging spot outside the bedroom. See our bedside routine guide.
